IMPROVED TS206H INTERNAL ROM BYPASS
Ao major barrier to Fiming the problems in INTERNAL FROM is one of ACCESS. Even though the ROM is socketed, you stil! have to open the case. This risks damage; and euen then, replacing FROM with EPROM requires wiring modi Fica- tions. This article shows how to replace HOME ROM and EXROM wi thout touching 8 Screw.
It is not necessary to replace ROM with EPROM. Gattery backed up static FAM will do as well if equiped with @& REAOQ ONLY switch. That way the RAM can be written and then switched over to uri te- protect state. The sawing in time over EPROM is impressive, however, you will probably elect to use EPROM once corrections hawe been made.

The design presented here has YeErL Carefully retained the ability to attach a non-TIRME® GEU with expansion slots -- or any other system your heart might desire.
Many users wil! not initially have a back-plane with expansion slots. The preferred location for FOAM bypass would seem to be the cartridge slot; however, locating it there desclosed a bug which inmuogived GE signal conflict an rare occasions.

HOME ROM is enabled by the SCLO using 8 Signal named ROMCS. Uniike ERO and FPOSCS, this
signal is not available exter rial li. Bur task is to disablie HOME
ROM, and then enable an exter—

The first is easy. Any time HOME ROM is being addressed, bus signal GE can be driven tow.
This suppresses FOMCS.
The second is a bit more complicated, but not difficult. HOME ROM is addressed whenever MOTHING ELSE is! It is a process of eBlimination.
HOME ROM is NOT being addressed whens:

Before attempting operating SsuStem revisions, a copy of existing code can be used in the bypass. This is an excellent

test of bypass circuitry. fo change in operation should be detectable when a bypsss card is present, ar absent.
EXROM REPLACEMENT —See Figure cb
ESsROM presents an interest- ing problem. It is enabled by the ESROM signal {not BANK #2543), but lack of complete internal address decoding results in false images occurring in all other chunks, not just CHUNK #D. If we had an expansion GANK #eSH, it would have higher priority than the internal chip -- but that requires a bank switching controller and usually a back- plane.
The simple solution is to physically remove the EsROM chip from inside and remount it with full address decoding on 2 board. Though it is necessary to open the case, no wiring changes are needed and the chip can aluays be put back.
FA tremendous advantage i5 gained when this is done. The false images are gone, making seven CHUNKS of ESROM auai lable for use as either FAM or EPROM as desired. Again, this can be tested for no change in opera-— tion before and after the change.

controller, it would seem impos- sible to use the GE signal ta disable the internal EsROM chip and still have an external by-
pass take over. The presence of the EXROM signal from the SCLO would try to cancel itself, resulting in oscillation.
If the initial presence of ERXROM signal can be latched on the bypass board, and then GE is switched low, this can be aunided.
NOW WE HAWE A WAY TO LEAVE THOSE SCREWS UNTOUCHED
We need to reset the latch before the next instruction comes along, when an external bank exerts priority, at power— up and REFRESH.
The extra cost of a sate approach might make the risk in removing the EsSROM chip seem worth while. That is what Figure 2b is for. This is MoT RECOMMENDED unless you are 3

I have been busy trying to get all my computers to talk to each other aver RS232. I made a Zes to QL cable a few months ago and it works well. It works so well that I store backups of all my 288 files on a Ql disk.
We have IBM PCS at work. I want to try and see how the 236 communicates with the IBM. That is by using a homemade cable and rot the ready made IBM Transfer package.
Atter some research and some trials and tribulations, I came up with a 288 to IBM cable. Here is the wiring diagram:

I tested this cable out with the IBM and it works fine. I used PROCOMM on the IBM. You can type on the ZS8 and it will appear on the IBM screen. Type on the IBM and it will appear on the Z88 screen. You can also transfer files by ascii and it works without any problem.
This same cable also works in connecting the Z88 to the 262 using a 2Z-S10 interface. Just connect it to the end of your moden cable.
The cable also works in connecting the @L SER2 to the 296¢ Z2-SiI0 interface. I was using Specterm 64 on the 2868 and @_Link
on the @L. I also transfered files
back and forth between the two
“ machines with xmodem.
If you are going to use this cable with the QL, the jumper on pins 4 and 5S of the DB? is not needed. But the 288 does require it. Also jumper pin 1 to pin 7 on the QL DB. -David Bennett

« MICRODRIVES SHORTAGES COMING
For those of you that don't get QL World, I will pass along
the following information fiom the June, 1989 issue concerning microdrives: “Ablex, the company which has made the tape cartridges since the start, reports that supplies of suitable magnetic tape from Ge:man comms giant BASF may dry up. Even if stocks are found, says production mansget David McSorky, Ablex will not make microcasceties after 1989.” Fos those that haven't converted over to disk drives, the info above should be the push needed to make the change. If you do convert, peshaps you ought to considet going with 3 1/2” drives. I can think of 4 reasons to do so:
|. Programs from the UK (where most come ftom) that cannot fit on e microdtive cartridge will be contsined on 3 U2", not S 1/4", disks.
2. They are quieter and seem to operate more reliably.
3. The cost of the drives is down to the $75-85 range and the disks are 59 cents each from MEI (800-634-3478)
4. Most drives are sold with adapter kits that allow you to mount them in 5 1/4" drive cases.
